The Caterham Seven goes back to the legendary Lotus Seven, which was built by Lotus Cars from 1957 to 1972. After its production ended, Caterham took over the rights to the design and has continued the concept in the UK ever since - as a kit or fully assembled vehicle. Technically, the Caterham is based on the Lotus Series 3, but has been continuously developed further. Caterham claims intellectual property rights to the design, but has had to accept legal defeats in individual cases, for example in South Africa. Nevertheless, the Caterham Seven is still regarded as the authentic successor to the Lotus Seven.
