Model history

The VW Beetle, known internally as Type 1 and based on a design by Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, had a decisive influence on the motorization of broad sections of the population from 1946 onwards. It became a symbol of affordable and reliable mobility. In 1972, the Beetle, with its sedan and convertible body styles, replaced the Ford Model T as the world's best-selling car – a record it held until 2002, when it was surpassed by its successor, the VW Golf. Production in Germany ended in 1978, with the last convertible rolling off the assembly line at Karmann in Osnabrück in 1980. But the successful model lived on: the Beetle continued to be built in South America for many years. On July 30, 2003, the last of a total of 21,528,480 units produced left the factory in Puebla, Mexico.

Technik: Ein Erfolgsmodell!!
