Model history
The second generation of the CL-Class was produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1998 to 2006 as a luxurious top-of-the-range coupé model. Technically, the CL was based on the S-Class W220, but had a wheelbase shortened by 20 centimeters, which gave it sportier lines and more dynamic proportions. The body construction combined different materials: while the floor panel, chassis parts and A-pillars were made of steel, aluminum was used for the roof and rear section. Magnesium door frames and plastic elements on the trunk lid and fenders underlined the innovative lightweight construction approach. The design language and the active chassis of the C215 were already shown in 1996 with the F200 concept car. The market launch in Germany took place in August 1999 with the CL 500, powered by a V8 engine.

Technik: Vor der Einführung der Klassenbezeichnung CL-Klasse (Coupé Luxus) von Mercedes-Benz wurden die Coupés der S-Klasse (Baureihe 126 und Baureihe 140) noch mit der Bezeichnung SEC, ab 1993 mit der Bezeichnungen S 420 C, S 500 C bzw. S 600 C benannt (C 140). LG Tom
