Model History

In 1990, BMW introduced the E31, the first generation of the 8 Series, which was an indirect successor to the BMW 6 Series. A two-door coupe with a V8 or V12 engine, the 8 Series was a grand tourer that BMW built from 1990 to 1999. Compared to the 6 Series, the 8 Series was considered an entirely new model class with significantly higher performance and price. The 8 Series was introduced at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 1989. As the first road car, with a V12 engine and a 6-speed manual transmission, the 8 Series was a milestone in BMW's history. Due to economic setbacks, BMW launched a rare E31 version with full M equipment. Only 299 examples were produced.
