With the Wankel engines, the Mazda brand had earned a reputation as an innovative high-tech pioneer, and in the 1990s, the rear-wheel-drive RX-7 was the icing on the cake in the Japanese automaker's model range. Mazda launched the first RX-7 in 1978. When it appeared, the time of the Wankel engine was almost over, but Mazda made a new attempt and had success with it. The RX-7 FD was introduced in 1991 and represented the further development of the previous RX-7 FC. With up to 280 hp, the RX-7 FD was the most powerful model from the RX-7 series, in Germany this Wankel athlete was only sold from 1991 to 1996, before the new emission regulations restricted the approval.

Now a Mazda RX-7 FD from the year of construction 1992 is sold in this auction, which was originally delivered to Germany for the first time. The first owner of this Wankel engine sports car with the FIN JMZFD13B200100181 was a gentleman from the year of construction 1919, who moved the RX-7 until 1996, the second holder is built in 1956 and then finally sold the Mazda in 2010 to the current seller due to an engine failure. In 2015, a complete overhaul of the engine took place. A checkbook is available and the history of this sports car can be approximately proven. In addition to 2 vehicle keys, the matching numbers are also available. According to seller statements, the TÜV is still done before the handover.

Yokohama tyres are mounted on the original 16-inch alloy wheels. A yellow Koni suspension provides a sportier set-up without changing the springs. In 2016, the tyres were replaced, the original brake lines were replaced by steel flex brake hoses, and a reinforced EBC brake was used on the front axle. According to the seller, discs and receipts of the brake system are almost new, the tires still have 90% of their new condition.

Over the years, the almost complete body was repainted in the original red shade – only the roof remained untouched. All gap dimensions around the car can be found at an even distance, color differences on the red paint compared to the roof are not present. Overall, the external condition of this RX-7 FD is well maintained and preserved except for the sports exhaust system without modifications. Corrosion on the neuralgic zones such as wheel arches, sills or end plates can not be found – in addition, the front and rear bumper present themselves in a good condition. The current owner mentions that the front bumper was repaired due to a parking bumper.

Both front seats got a new leather covered over time, so they are in very good shape. In addition, a good and well-kept condition can be taken from the entire interior, as there is no damage to the interior of this RX-7 FD except for minimal traces of use and small scratches. In addition to a sunroof, power steering, central locking and electric windows, features include air conditioning as well as ABS, cruise control and an original cassette radio. Up to a rev counter that is sometimes suspended according to the current holder, all switches, levers, instruments and displays inside the Mazda work without any problems.

The various round instruments in the dashboard are set in chrome: 90,000 kilometres can be read in the instrument cluster of this Wankel-engined sports car – proof of this can be found in the partially stamped service booklet.

The turbocharged two-disc Wankel engine with its chamber volume of 2x 654 cc delivers 239 hp, and the power of the engine is transmitted to the rear axle via a 5-speed manual transmission. In 2015, an engine overhaul took place, since then the car has only run 1,000 kilometers. The complete engine wiring harness was new, all vacuum hoses have been replaced and the ignition system has been renewed. Water chiller and oil auxiliary pump were also exchanged for new parts. An optimization of the engine performance was achieved by a mechanical processing of the inlet channels. Only recently, the Mazda RX-7 was given a fresh service.

Original and thus untreated is the underbody of the car, which has only slight rust in the more than 30 years. The RX-7 FD is a milestone in sports car history, through console games and movies such as "The Fast and The Furious", an RX-7 enjoys cult status to this day. Driving pleasure was probably at the top of the specifications of the Japanese for this car at that time, even today the Wankel engine inspires with its extended speed range and its own sound.
