Model history
The Austin Gipsy was developed in response to the failed introduction of the elaborate "Champ" military vehicle and the great market success of the Land Rover. Unlike the Land Rover, the Gipsy featured a robust steel body and advanced independent suspension with Flexitor rubber springs, which enabled high off-road capability at high speeds. It was powered by a 2.2-liter gasoline or diesel engine with low compression, which made it tolerant of low-quality fuel. Later variants offered optional leaf springs and a long version with a 111-inch wheelbase. After the merger of BMC and Leyland, the Gipsy was discontinued in 1968 after around 21,000 units had been built.
