Model history
When the first Citroën Traction Avant, the 7A, was presented in 1934, it was considered a sensation in the automotive world. However, observers at the time would hardly have thought it possible that this progressive model series would remain in the sales program until 1957. Front-wheel drive in series production - called "Traction Avant" in French - was new in this class. The self-supporting, aerodynamic all-steel body with its balanced weight distribution was also unique. The positioning of the gearbox in front of the engine and front axle was also innovative. The good roadholding allowed relatively high cornering speeds and gave the Traction Avant safe driving characteristics, which were appreciated by both the French police and bank robbers - the vehicles were therefore often referred to as "gangster Citroëns".
