The BMW E46, suc­ces­sor to the E36, made its debut in 1998 as a saloon and Tour­ing, fol­lowed later by the Coupé and Cabri­o­let. The engines included four-cylin­der mod­els such as the 318i with 2.0 liters, as well as six-cylin­der mod­els such as the 330i with 3.0 liters. The M3 model offered a high-revving 3.2-liter inline six-cylin­der engine. By 2006, over 2.7 mil­lion E46s had been pro­duced.
