In the mid-1980s, all-wheel drive was booming among passenger car manufacturers, a development that BMW was not willing to ignore. Audi was setting the pace in terms of drive technology at the time, and it quickly became clear that anyone without all-wheel drive in their range was losing out. BMW countered from the mid-1980s with the all-wheel drive version of the E30: The "iX" version of the E30 first appeared in the form of the sedan, followed later by the station wagon. The new all-wheel-drive BMW was recognizable by the plastic trim on the fenders and sills. The only engine available was the in-line six-cylinder with 2.5-liter displacement and 170 hp. Produced were the so-called 325iX between 1985 and 1991.
