Technik: Mit diesem Modell wurde bei BMW ab 1989 die Vierventiltechnik in die Großserienproduktion aufgenommen. Dies war bislang nur in den geringen Stückzahlen in den M Motoren vorbehalten. Wie bei BMW üblich bekam das sportliche 3er Modell während der Entwicklung Hilfe durch die M GmbH. Klammern wir den Supersportler M3 an dieser Stelle einmal aus, liefert der 318is eine dynamische Option im Trio der 4-Zylinder - Triebwerke. Ein Sondermodell suchte man vergeblich, dennoch war die Ausstattungsliste für damals im E30 sehr gut bestückt. In anderen Motorvarianten gab es ein paar Sondermodelle, die auch gerne mal von Edel Tuner zum Einzelstück gemacht wurden. Den 318is gab es nur als 2 Türer und als Cabrio von TC Baur. Ab Ende 1989 gab es Ihn auch in der Sport Variante mit dem M Technik 2 Aerodynamik Paket. Wer sich damals einen 325 oder einen e30 m3 nicht leisten konnte, war mit dem 318is ganz gut bedient. Er ähnelt ein wenig an die 4 Zylinder Motoren, die es ab 1986 im M3 gab, aber in der Tat basiert der M42 auf dem Achtventilmotor aus dem 318i (M10). Er war somit eine Weiterentwicklung des M40 Motors. Der BMW e30 318is war von BMW 1989 die Antwort auf den von VW entwickelten 2 er Golf GTI 16V und dem aus Rüsselsheim kommenden Opel GSI 16V.
