Shortly after the introduction of the predecessor R 107, Mercedes-Benz began developing its successor in 1974. However, the R 107 developed into a perennial favourite in the course of its biblically long construction period of 18 years, which is why the successor was postponed again and again and detailed work on the R 129 did not take place again until 1981. The new SL generation of the R 129 model series finally celebrated its world premiere in 1989 at the Geneva Motor Show. When it comes to safety, Mercedes-Benz naturally also wanted to impress with this model series: ABS, airbag (initially optional only for the driver), an extendable roll bar and so-called integral seats at the front, in which belts and tighteners are attached to the seat.

Now a Mercedes-Benz of the R 129 series from the year of construction 1994 is offered for auction: This is the model SL 320, the FIN is WDB1290631F101979. Since the last owner (built in 1950) can no longer drive the R 129 for reasons of age, the roadster is sold. A total of 2 owners called the SL their own, originally the Mercedes-Benz was delivered in Germany, but most recently it was registered in Luxembourg. The main inspection is carried out before the handover by the seller, 2 radio keys are still available for the car. In addition, the SL 320 has a checkbook, which traces the history of the R 129 back. Matching numbers are given.

Thanks to its mild wedge shape and long wheelbase, the proportions of the R 129 look very harmonious: this Mercedes-Benz Roadster still bears the original manufacturer's colour "Blue-Black Metallic" (colour code 199) as the first paint – the seller states that there are apparently no repaints. On the front side panels, simple air intakes are recognizable, which give the SL 320 a sporty look. With the exception of normal signs of use resulting from the years, no defects can be found in the paint, negative abnormalities on the exterior are not to be mentioned. The black fabric top is tight, crack-free and works without any problems.

Michelin tyres are mounted on 16-inch original Mercedes-Benz eight-hole alloy wheels. The tyres come from the production year 2016, the rims are in good condition. Abnormalities on the brake are not to be criticized, the chassis presents itself original and untinkered.

Typical for the 129 series are the integral seats, which optimize the belt guidance without any B-posts. In the interior of this SL you are greeted by beige leather seats – the door panels and the footwell carpet are also kept in beige color. Except for a slight patina, which can be removed from the driver's seat, no abnormalities in the interior are noticeable. This SL 320 has the following optional extras: Burglary and theft warning system (EDW), thermally insulating glass, heated seats, electric windows, cruise control, wood/leather steering wheel with airbag, front passenger airbag, Radio MB-Special. Also worth mentioning is the present hardtop.

Five round instruments of simple functionality are in the driver's field of vision: the digital odometer shows a mileage of 118,500 kilometers. The complete on-board folder including a partially managed checkbook is available – this allows the mileage of the SL 320 to be proven. The instruments in the interior must be certified to function properly.

The 3.2-litre in-line six-cylinder engine in the SL 320 delivers 231 hp and is shifted via a 5-speed automatic transmission. The engine compartment is clean, a final service took place at mileage 116,540 in February 2022. Defects in the technology can not be detected.

Given the age of this roadster, the underbody presents itself in a well-preserved condition. With an SL of the R 129 series, a certain prestige – while cruising through the area in a relaxed, comfortable and safe way – always drives along.
