In 1995, BMW joined the fray with the Z3, which was produced in the USA. Its engine range was much wider than that of its competitors: It ranged from the 115-hp 1.8-liter to the 2.8-liter inline-six introduced in 1997 to the Z3 M's brute 3.2-liter powerplant with 321 hp. Incidentally, in addition to the Roadster, a closed version was also available as the Z3 Coupé. In 2002 BMW stopped the production of the Z3 after nearly 280,000 built roadsters and 18,000 produced coupes.
