Model history

The introduction of the R 107 in 1971 marked the beginning of a new era of roadster design at Mercedes-Benz. As the successor to the "Pagoda" (W 113), it set new stylistic accents with ribbed taillights, wide-band H4 headlights, and a clear wedge shape. The R 107 series was tailored to the US market, which was also its main sales market, with large-volume V8 engines. Safety played a central role: the A-pillar was specially reinforced, and from 1982 an airbag was even available.
