The Mercedes-Benz R 129 is a two-seater roadster from the SL series, which was built from 1989 to 2001 and replaced the R 107. Initially known as the "500 SL," it officially became part of the SL-Class in 1993, as the "SL 500." With its clean design, high level of safety features, and standard hardtop, the R 129 set new standards in the sporty luxury roadster segment. In 2001, it was replaced by its successor, the R 230.

Technik: Innerhalb der Bauzeit des Modells wurden die Mercedes-Klassenbezeichnungen eingeführt. Während frühe Exemplare noch als SL-Modelle (mit angefügtem SL, z. B. 500 SL) bezeichnet wurden, gehörte der R 129 ab 1993 zur SL-Klasse (mit vorangestelltem SL, z. B. SL 500). Das Fahrwerkssystem ADS (Adaptives Dämpfungssystem) wurde erstmals bei einem Mercedes als Option angeboten. Es war eine teil-hydraulische elektronische Federung der Radaufhängung (siehe Aktive Radaufhängung) mit Niveauregulierung sowohl für die Vorder- als auch für die Hinterachse. Die optimale Dämpfung wurde pro Rad anhand von Parametern von Radbeschleunigungssensoren sowie von Längs- und Querbeschleunigungssensoren des Fahrzeugs ständig elektronisch berechnet und in vier Stufen angepasst. Zudem wurde das Fahrzeug bei Geschwindigkeiten ab 120 km/h um 20 mm tiefergelegt, und die Bodenfreiheit konnte bei Geschwindigkeiten unter 40 km/h per Knopfdruck um 40 mm erhöht werden.
