Unlike the massively representative predecessor of the W 116 model series, the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W 126) presented in September 1979 was more coupé-like and graceful. Slightly longer than the previous model and equipped with a slightly longer wheelbase, the timelessly drawn new did not look antiquated even years later. There was the S-Class of the W 126 series with a normal wheelbase and extended wheelbase (SEL). The smallest engine was the 2.8-liter in-line six-cylinder, at the upper end was the 560 with 5.6-liter V8 engine. A total of almost 900,000 units of the 126 series were produced.
