Model history

The Mercedes-Benz R129 was introduced in 1989 as an innovative roadster with a fully automatic fabric top and retractable roll bar – a first for the SL series. It was powered by powerful V8 and later V12 engines, featuring four-valve technology for the first time. From the early 1990s, official AMG models such as the SL 60 AMG and SL 73 AMG were added to the range.
In 1994, the first facelift took place with a new model nomenclature: The 300 SL and 500 SL became the SL 280, SL 320, and SL 500. A major technical update followed in 1998 with new engines from the current S-Class, including V6, V8, and V12 units with modern three-valve technology.
To this day, the R129 is considered one of the most technically advanced and stylistically timeless models in the SL series.
