Model history

The new class from BMW was the bestseller in the sales program at the end of the 1960s, and so nothing was more obvious than to present a sporty and elegant offshoot. Production of the coupé bodies began at Karmann in Osnabrück in 1965: The 2000 C and the sports version of the CS were the spearheads in the battle for market share. Both model variants had a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine under the hood, from which BMW coaxed up to 120 hp in the CS thanks to two flat-flow twin carburettors. The coupé remained in BMW's model range until mid-1970, and a total of around 13,700 new-class coupés were produced.
