Porsche 924 (1976)

Vehicle description
Even before the production of the VW-Porsche had ended, the Swabians received the development order for an independent VW sports car. But things turned out differently and Volkswagen stopped the project, instead Porsche developed the car independently until it was ready for series production. The new one was called the 924 and with it the Porsche company broke new ground, because for the first time a Porsche had a front engine. To compensate for the unfavorable weight distribution, the 2+2-seater with the large tailgate received a manual transmission in transaxle arrangement – i.e. a shift box on the rear axle. In the end, the 924 remained in the range from 1976 to 1985, laying the foundation for the transaxle model era at Porsche.

The Porsche to be purchased in this auction is a 924 from the year of construction 1976, i.e. a very early example. In May 1976, the first registration of this transaxle athlete with the chassis number 9246103406 took place, according to the seller, the Porsche is a re-import from Italy. A partially available history confirms the history of this 924, in total the car has 2 holders. 2 vehicle keys still exist, an H-approval is not yet available, but the last completed TÜV is valid until June 2024. In addition to a valuation report, the given matching numbers are worth mentioning.

The silhouette of the Porsche 924 is unmistakable: low front with folding headlights and high rear with glass dome. This transaxle sports car in the colour red underwent a complete repaint in the Netherlands in 2017 – due to this not too long ago painting work, the body of this Porsche is in a stainless condition. In addition, no gross defects can be found on the exterior that could cloud the good external overall condition of the 924. Furthermore, no modifications deviating from the original condition on the exterior are to be noted. Neither the front bumper nor the rear bumper are covered with parking bumps or other damage, an accident is ruled out by the current owner in its holding period.

In terms of rim technology, this 924 has its original aluminum rims – mounted on them are tires in very good condition, which, according to the current holder, have only been mounted for 3,000 kilometers. The brakes can be found in TÜV-compliant condition, no deviations from the original condition can be taken in the area of the chassis.

The partial leather seats of this Porsche 924, which have a pattern that matches the colour well with the paint colour, are contemporary. On the leather side cheeks of the driver's seat, 2 cracks can be detected, otherwise the partial leather seats present themselves in good condition. A few cracks can be removed from the dashboard and the 2-spoke leather steering wheel has a few traces of use, as does the gear knob. Although the equipment of this Porsche 924 is somewhat sparse and the only feature is the contemporary Philips cassette radio, but everything you need to drive is available in this 924. In addition, all instruments, displays, switches and controls in the interior function flawlessly.

3 deeply inserted round instruments adorn the driver's cockpit: The 5-digit speedometer of this transaxle athlete shows a mileage of about 81,000 kilometers. Based on various available documents, this mileage seems credible.

The water-cooled in-line four-cylinder engine in this 924 delivers 120 hp, and the gears can be engaged without any problems via a 4-speed manual transmission flanged to the rear axle. In June 2022, this Porsche was subjected to a final service, defects in the powertrain are not to be listed according to the seller.

In view of the vehicle age of 46 years, the underbody of this 924 impresses with its extremely well-preserved condition. A Porsche 924 combines large-scale production technology with long-term quality, its appearance with the folding headlights simply ensures sympathy. If you want to secure an early copy from the early days of the model 924 – in an iconic color combination – this example to be auctioned here is recommended, because this completely revives the zeitgeist of the pure 1970s.
