Model history

The R107 as the 350 SL and the 450 SL were initially equipped with hydraulic clutches and a soft four-speed planetary gearbox, but from June 1972 onwards they were fitted with hydraulic torque converters and three-speed planetary gearboxes. This could then also be found in the W126. From 1980, all R107s were equipped with an additional gear. Manual gearboxes were only available for the 350 SL (4-speed), 280 SL (4- and 5-speed) and 300 SL (5-speed).
