Model history

The others were fashionable, a Mercedes had to be modern and timeless - but even for this claim, a construction period of 18 years is unusually long. The SL models of the R107 model series made it. And this despite the fact that their design was initially polarizing: when the SL models appeared in spring 1971, discussions were sparked by the new headlights in glass block design, the ribbed rear lights and the functionless sheet metal ribs between the front and rear wheel arches. However, there was no doubt that the R107 marked the beginning of a new world of SL driving: a modern semi-trailing arm design replaced the old-fashioned rear swing axle. And: for the first time, there was an SL with an eight-cylinder engine.
