Technik: Jaguar brachte den XJ-S nach einer Ölkrise auf den Markt, als der Markt für einen Grand Tourer mit 5,3-Liter-V12-Motor klein war. Der XJ-S war eine radikale Abkehr vom E-Type, den er ersetzte: Er wurde von einem Sportwagen zu einem GT und verlor die Option eines Cabriodachs. Die Strebepfeiler hinter den Fenstern wurden damals kritisiert, da die deutschen Behörden befürchteten, dass diese die Sicht nach hinten einschränken würden, und verweigerten dem XJ-S (und dem ähnlich konstruierten Lancia Montecarlo ) die Typgenehmigung. Deutsche XJ-S-Käufer mussten bei der Zulassung für jedes einzelne Auto eine Straßenzulassung einholen. Die Verkaufszahlen blieben hartnäckig niedrig und die Produktion wurde für die Hälfte des Jahres 1981 eingestellt, um nicht verkaufte Lagerbestände abzubauen. Wegen der schleppenden Verkaufszahlen hatte Leyland Cars beschlossen, die Produktion des Autos einzustellen, beschloss aber, ihm mit einem leichten Facelift und Motorüberholungen eine weitere Chance zu geben. Das italienische Designhaus Pininfarina stellte 1978 ein Konzeptauto auf Basis des XJ-S vor, den Jaguar XJSpider; der jedoch nicht in Produktion ging. LG Tom
