Model history

The idea of fitting a powerful engine into a compact car was nothing new. And yet it has made the GTI a legend: a GTI is still in the VW model range today, now in its 8th generation. However, the foundation stone was laid in 1976 with the Golf 1 GTI. After the success of the one-series GTI, there was no question that there would also have to be a GTI from its successor. This followed in 1984, shortly after the market launch of the Golf 2. The new model had become visibly larger, even if it initially still had the tried-and-tested technology under the body. In the GTI, this meant 112 hp from 1.8 liters, with a catalytic converter briefly 107 hp. In 1986, the Wolfsburg-based company followed up with the GTI 16V. A second GTI not only carried the core of the original model, it also belonged to the virtually indestructible second Golf generation.
