• The 1960 Ford Thunderbird, once the best-selling car in the U.S. in 1960, was produced in a total production of 92,843 units, of which only 27% (25,186) were equipped with an optional spare tire carrier. This spare wheel carrier, available at an additional cost of $100, provided space for the spare wheel as well as a tool kit, but was avoided by most buyers due to its space-consuming nature. Today, 1960 Thunderbirds with spare tire racks are more desirable than those without because of their rarity and authentic character.
