Technik: Da die Porsche-Modellpalette bereits den 924 und 928 umfasste, wurde das 911-Programm ab dem Modelljahr 1978 gestrafft: Der Carrera entfiel – es gab den 911 nur noch als SC und Turbo. Der 911 SC hatte die breite Karosserie des Carrera und einen Dreilitermotor mit 132 kW (180 PS) mit mechanischer K-Jetronic. Der Wagen wurde in Leistung und Höchstgeschwindigkeit vom Porsche 928 übertroffen, der nach den Vorstellungen der Porsche-Führung den 911 in den 1980er Jahren ablösen sollte. Im Modelljahr 1980 wurde die Leistung des SC auf 138 kW (188 PS) angehoben und im folgenden Modelljahr 1981 durch Umstellung von Normal- auf Superbenzin auf 150 kW (204 PS) weiter gesteigert. Die halbautomatische Sportomatic entfiel. Die Langzeitgarantie gegen Durchrostung der Karosserie konnte mit Verwendung von beidseitig feuerverzinkten Stahlblechen auf sieben Jahre verlängert werden. Später wurde diese auf zehn Jahre ausgedehnt.
