Model history

From June 1983, Fiat offered the Panda 4x4, an off-road version of the popular small car. The switchable four-wheel drive was developed in collaboration with Steyr-Puch in Graz, where the vehicle was also assembled. The Panda 4x4 proved its potential as early as 1984 in the Paris–Dakar Rally. The car, which weighed around 850 kg, was initially powered by a 948 cc engine with 48 hp. This was followed in 1986 by the first FIRE engine with 999 cc, which delivered up to 50 hp. From 1991, a 1108 cm³ engine with 50 hp was used, which was slightly revised again in 1995 and from then on delivered 54 hp. The Panda 4x4 established itself as a compact and robust all-rounder – not only in the Alpine regions.
