And as with its predecessor, it also has a four-cylinder heart beating under the bonnet: it is based on the engine of the 944 S2, but thanks to the newly introduced "Vario Cam" camshaft adjustment, the 3.0-litre naturally aspirated engine provided even more torque and pulling power, especially in the lower and medium speed range. What also impresses about the engine is the smooth running, which almost reaches the level of a six-cylinder thanks to two balance shafts. Finally, just over 11,000 units of the 968 were built by the end of production in 1995.
