Technik: American Motors Corporation (AMC) hatte den neuen Jeep mit dem Ziel entwickelt, mehr Alltagsfahrer anzusprechen und so den Fahrkomfort auf der Straße zu erhöhen. Es handelte sich um ein deutlich überarbeitetes Design mit breiterer Spur, etwas geringerer Bodenfreiheit , mehr Komfort und verbessertem Fahrverhalten. Der YJ besaß weiterhin eine Blattfederung ähnlich der des CJ – allerdings waren die Federn breiter. Der erste Wrangler verfügte zudem über Panhardstab -Aufhängung und Stabilisatoren für ein verbessertes Fahrverhalten und mehr Sicherheit, wodurch das Überschlagen durch ungeübte oder unvorsichtige Fahrer erschwert wurde.
