    Technik: Technisch von der Vorgängerserie wenig abweichend, wurde mit dem letzten Werk des Porsche-Chefdesigners Harm Lagaay eine Änderung präsentiert, die für Diskussionen sorgte: die Wiedereinführung der runden Scheinwerfer. Diese Modifikation betrachteten die meisten Kunden und Anhänger der Marke als Rückgewinn eines vermissten typischen Merkmals des klassischen Porsche 911, da die kontrovers diskutierten und beim Vorgänger Porsche 996 eingeführten, sogenannten Spiegeleier-Leuchten hier wieder abgeschafft wurden und somit ein dem „originalen“ 911 (bzw. dem Porsche 993) ähnlicheres Erscheinungsbild wiederhergestellt wurde. Die im Vergleich zum Vorgänger 996 kaum gestiegene Motorleistung, bei leicht höherer Leermasse des Fahrzeuges, löste Kritik aus. Die Konkurrenz bot inzwischen bereits Fahrzeuge mit deutlich mehr Leistung an, auch wenn diese Fahrzeuge häufig schwerer sind als ein Porsche 997 und dementsprechend in der Fahrdynamik unterliegen. Auf positive Kritik stieß die Karosseriegestaltung der Modelle Carrera 4/4S insbesondere im Bereich der hinteren Radläufe, die nun wieder „hüftenartig“ ausgeführt sind. Darüber hinaus hat der 997 keine offensichtliche stilistische Ähnlichkeit mit dem günstigeren Boxster mehr und ähnelt vor allem von vorn wieder älteren 911-Modellen.
