Visitors to the Frankfurt International Motor Show in 1951 must have been speechless, because what they saw at the BMW stand was not a small car for the people, but a massive body of the automotive luxury class. The newcomer was called bmw 501 and, contrary to the design of other automobiles of the time, started with a very individually tailored line. In the vernacular, the term "Baroque Angel" was introduced for the 501. Not only the luxurious interior made the new BMW so popular – there were also a lot of innovations of a technical nature: Including the so-called "full protection frame", which promised the occupants full-width safety.

Now a so-called "baroque angel" – a BMW 501A – from 1954 can be purchased in this auction. For 40 years, this BMW stood in a dry heating cellar and can therefore be found in a unique, original condition. According to seller statements, the first owner sold the BMW with the chassis number 42979 after almost 2 years in August 1956, but the 501 remained from this time until today in family ownership. A partially existing history of the vehicle is available – it is known that this 501 was restored between 2008 and 2009 (invoices and photo documentation are available). The current holder has recently (in June 2022) prepared an expert opinion, which certifies the 501 with a grade of 2+.

The interior of the BMW 501 offers a living room ambience: the thickly upholstered seats allow you to sit comfortably and as a driver you can use a 2-spoke steering wheel in ivory colour with chrome horn ring. The entire interior of this vehicle is extremely well maintained for its age and preserved without damage. A special feature is the blue folding roof, which has no cracks and can be opened and closed perfectly. Furthermore, a contemporary radio can be discovered in the interior, which also works without any problems. Currently, however, the radio is not connected, the new radio antenna is located in the trunk and can be installed by the new owner, in a suitable place for him. incidentally, all switches, levers and buttons inside the BMW 501 are said to function flawlessly.

A complete restoration took place in 2008 and 2009, in which the baroque angel was technically overhauled, as well as the interior. The lacquer dress of the 501 is original and there is no repainting, which is absolutely rare. On the basis of various calculations, it is understandable that the total value of the reconstruction amounts to 31,000 €. Photo documentation is available for the respective works, which sheds light on the expenses and implementations in detail. Now the exterior of this BMW presents itself in a very good condition: The paint, the chrome and all add-on parts on the car are fully preserved. The glass panes are also crack-free and preserved without stone chips. Rust on the body can not be found, in the report the BMW is even attested to an unwelded condition.

The tires can apparently be attributed a good condition with sufficient tread, in the area of the rims – which are kept in body color and have chrome covers – no damage is present. No deficits can be detected in the brake system as well as in the area of the chassis.

The displays in the dashboard of the car are filigree: 48,440 kilometres can be read on the speedometer. This mileage is the original mileage of this even unique BMW 501. Various documents such as the proof of restoration, various invoices, which were cancelled from 2011, as well as the present first car letter from 1954 ensure a rich history of the car. In addition, there is a repair manual and the original editions of the sales brochures for the BMW 501 from 1954.

The 2.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine in the front of the car delivers 65 hp, while the 4-speed steering wheel transmission ensures power transmission. According to the seller, various invoices from inspections and repair work between 2011 and 2022 were cancelled, which show that a total of over € 15,000 has been invested in this time to maintain the good condition of the BMW.
