Model history

By the end of the 1950s, the VW Beetle was already looking back on an existence that had led to two generation changes in other models. Not so with the Type 1, which continued to be built stoically over the decades with a crankshaft front axle and swing rear axle, apart from the 1302 and 1303 Beetles. All assemblies underwent cosmetic changes, usually several times; the engine output increased from 30 to 34 to 50 hp. When people think of the Beetle, they usually have the 1200 in mind; the model designation 1200 is due to its engine capacity. In 1955, Volkswagen celebrated one million Beetles; worldwide Beetle production only ended in 2003 with over 21.5 million vehicles built.
