The history of the Renault GTA is closely linked to the financial rescue of Alpine by Renault in 1975, when the company was in a difficult financial situation. Renault recognized the value of Alpine's road and racing experience and prevented the manufacturer from going bankrupt by taking over the company. The GTA was the first Alpine to be officially branded "Renault" after the takeover of Alpine by Renault. Although production remained at the Dieppe plant in France, the GTA was developed by Renault itself and benefited from the research and development power and quality standards of the major manufacturer.
