Technik: Den technischen Höhepunkt der Käferentwicklung in Deutschland markiert das im August 1970 erschienene Modell 1302. Ein längerer Vorderwagen mit MacPherson-Federbeinachse und unter dem Kofferraumboden verborgen liegendem Reserverad, Schräglenkerhinterachse, die es bis dahin ausschließlich in den Automatik-Käfern gegeben hatte, und ein 50-PS-Motor (37 kW) im S-Modell waren die Merkmale des 1302. Am 17. Februar 1972 lief ein 1302 S in Marathonblaumetallic als 15.007.034. Fahrzeug vom Band und löste damit die Tin Lizzy – Fords Modell T – als meistgebautes Auto ab. Nach den Werksferien im August 1972 wurde zum Modelljahr 1973 der 1303 eingeführt, dessen Technik der des 1302 entsprach. Nach einer geplanten, aber nie in Kraft getretenen US-Vorschrift, der zufolge die Frontpassagiere bei einem Unfall nicht mit dem Gesicht gegen die Scheibe prallen durften, erhielt das Modell 1303 eine weit nach vorn gewölbte Windschutzscheibe. Außerdem gehörte eine Lüftungsanlage mit zweistufig regelbarem Gebläse zur Ausstattung. Eine Drehstromlichtmaschine ersetzte die bis dahin verwendete Gleichstromlichtmaschine. Der letzte Käfer aus Wolfsburg lief am 1. Juli 1974 nach 11.916.519 dort produzierten Exemplaren vom Band. Die Produktion wurde auf den VW Golf I umgestellt. Gleichzeitig stellte VW in Deutschland die Weiterentwicklung des Käfers ein. LG Tom
