Technik: Die Edelkarosse mit Stern von gestern! Infolge der Ölkrise konzentrierte man sich bei der Entwicklung der neuen S-Klasse parallel zum sicherheitstechnisch Bestmöglichen auch auf ökonomische Kriterien wie etwa die Senkung des Fahrzeuggewichts, und dadurch auf die Verbesserung des fahrzeugspezifischen Verbrauchs im Vergleich zur Vorgängerbaureihe. Durch eine strömungsgünstige Form mit einem CW-Wert von 0,36 statt 0,41 sowie leichtere Bauweise konnte der Verbrauch der Baureihe 126 gegenüber ihrem Vorgängermodell W 116 um über 10 % gesenkt werden. Durch weitere Maßnahmen im Rahmen des „Mercedes-Benz Energiekonzepts“ im Jahre 1981 sank der Verbrauch weiter; der 500 SE verbrauchte bis zu 30 % weniger als der Vorgänger 450 SE der Baureihe 116. Die Gewichtsreduzierung (von 60 kg beim 280 SE bis zu 280 kg beim 500 SEL im Vergleich zum 450 SEL 6.9 wurde unter anderem durch den vermehrten Einsatz von Kunststoffen und den Leichtmetall-Motorblock der Achtzylindermotoren M 116 und M 117 erreicht. Die Karosserie wurde mit Hilfe von Rechnern konstruiert (CAD). Einige Teile bestehen aus mit Titan, Vanadium und Niob legierten Stählen, die bei geringerer Materialstärke die gleiche Festigkeit wie herkömmliche Bleche boten.
