Lotus Lotus Elise Series 1 First Generation Roadster (1999)

Moritz Niemann

Kickdown's Take

by Moritz Niemann

This Lotus Elise S1 is pure, untamed driving pleasure in its most honest form! Designed as a tribute to the legendary Sport 160, this blue roadster combines lightweight perfection with a healthy dose of extra power. Around €15,000 has been invested in first-class upgrades – from the powerful VVC replacement engine with 200 hp to the Emerald control unit and the crisp, short gearbox. Every corner becomes an experience in this Elise, accompanied by the throaty sound of the sports exhaust system. Get in, feel the road, and leave everyday life behind in the rearview mirror!

Model history

The Lotus Elise was first unveiled at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main in 1995 and from the outset embodied the principle of its founder Colin Chapman: "First take simplicity, then add lightness." With compact dimensions, a mid-engine, and a consistent disregard for comfort, it focused entirely on lightweight construction and driving dynamics. At its heart was an innovative aluminum chassis weighing only around 65 kg, constructed using a bonded and riveted design, combined with a body made of glass-fiber-reinforced plastic. The Elise was named after Elisa, the granddaughter of the then Lotus owner Romano Artioli. Its market success far exceeded expectations, with a total of over 35,000 units produced. In 2021, the Elise era came to an end in favor of the new Lotus Emira.
