The Ferrari California was developed as a luxurious Gran Turismo with high performance and was first presented in 2008. The model combined the dynamics of a sports car with the comfort of a 2+2 hardtop convertible and marked a significant expansion of the Ferrari model range. Initially equipped with a 4.3-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, the California received a lighter and more powerful version in 2012, known as the California 30. In 2014, Ferrari presented the second generation, the California T, which received a 3.9-liter V8 biturbo engine for the first time. The model thus set new standards in terms of efficiency and driving performance. The name "California" was a nod to historic models from the 1950s and 1960s and underlined the connection to the brand's long-standing tradition. In 2018, the California was finally replaced by the Ferrari Portofino.
