BMW 320i Cabriolet E30 (1988)

Louis Kalendruschat

Kickdown's Take

by Louis Kalendruschat

The 320i Convertible offered here is a sought-after manual transmission model with a six-cylinder engine. These models fetch the highest prices on the market. The extensive restoration carried out a few years ago is documented with photos, which is very important for maintaining the car's value. A service including a timing belt replacement was recently carried out, so the new owner can enjoy this open-top BMW right away.

Vehicle description

For sale is a 1988 BMW 320i Convertible (E30) in black metallic with a red leather interior.

Highlights:

  • Sought-after six-cylinder engine with manual transmission
  • Owned by the current owner for 13 years, extremely well-maintained collector’s car
  • The current owner has extensively restored the BMW, including:
    • Completely overhauled engine (engine block honed, pistons and valves replaced, and valves machine-ground—video available) approximately 10 years ago; since then, the car has been driven a total of less than 100 kilometers, exclusively for maintenance runs
    • New leather interior with M-style sport seats, high-quality original M Nappa leather
    • Complete repainting approx. 12 years ago
    • Hot wax cavity sealing ("Mike Sander") of the bare chassis
    • All wheel bearings, dampers, steering/track rods, and rubber bushings/mounts on the axles have been replaced
    • Brake system completely overhauled
    • Clutch replaced
    • Windshield replaced
  • Prior to restoration, the car had been a project vehicle for many years and was not driven, which explains the low mileage of 64,364 kilometers
  • In March 2026, the timing belt was replaced, the valves were adjusted, and a service was performed
  • New tires
  • MOT valid until February 2028 and H-license plate

Model history

The BMW E30 was introduced in November 1982 as the successor to the first 3 Series (E21) and further developed under design chief Claus Luthe. Unlike its predecessor, the E30 was offered in significantly more variants, including two- and four-door sedans, a convertible, and later the Touring. Thanks to its diverse body styles and the characteristic inline-six engines, the E30 became one of the most influential and successful generations of the BMW 3 Series.

Summary

For sale is a 1988 BMW 320i Convertible (E30) in Black Metallic with red leather interior and M-style sport seats. The vehicle has an H-license plate and a TÜV inspection valid until February 2028, is ready to drive immediately, and has recently undergone a service. The car underwent extensive restoration several years ago. Of particular note is the completely overhauled engine, which included replacing the pistons and valves as well as honing the engine block. It has covered less than 100 kilometers since then. The vehicle is complemented by refurbished leather upholstery. Overall, this classic BMW 3 Series presents itself as an interesting modern classic for enthusiasts of the E30 series.

LG Tom
