Originally designed for motorsport, the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo.1 was soon to be found in normal traffic. The Evo in the designation stands for Evolution and indicates that it was a further development that was specially designed for homologation in touring car racing. The Evo.1 version was built to meet the requirements of Group A of the German Touring Car Championship (DTM). The aerodynamic improvements, such as the adjustable rear wing and wider wheel arches, were designed to increase the car's competitiveness in motorsport. Although the main target was the race track, the Evo.1 version also helped to make the road model a desirable and exclusive sports car for enthusiasts.
