Technik: 1971 war der Mach 1 mit einem 302 Windsor-Motor (F-Code) und drei 351 Cleveland-Motoren erhältlich: dem H-Code 2-V, dem M-Code 4-V und ab Mai 1971 dem Q-Code 351CJ (Cobra Jet oder GT-Motor). Die M- und Q-Code-Motoren wurden bis zum Ende des Modelljahres 1971 parallel produziert. Außerdem gab es zwei 429-Kubikzoll-Optionen: den C-Code CJ (Cobra Jet) und den J-Code CJ-R (Cobra Jet – Ram Air). Mit dem optionalen „Drag Pak“ (3,91 (V) oder 4,11 (Y)) Hinterachsübersetzung wurde jeder 429er zum „Super Cobra Jet“ mit starrer Nockenwelle, Holley- Vergaser (780 cfm) und spezieller Kurbelwelle mit Schmiedekolben. Eines der markantesten Merkmale des Mach 1 (1971–1973) ist die Motorhaube mit den beiden Lufteinlässen. Diese war bei den 302er-Modellen ohne Aufpreis erhältlich und bei allen anderen serienmäßig. Die Basisversion besaß funktionslose, im NACA-Stil gehaltene Lufteinlässe. Mit der optionalen Ram-Air- Ansaugung wurden diese jedoch funktionsfähig. Sie umfasste in jedem Lufteinlass eine vakuumgesteuerte Klappe sowie ein Ansaugrohr aus Fiberglas unter der Motorhaube, das kühle Außenluft durch ein modifiziertes, gummiertes Luftfiltergehäuse zum Vergaser leitete . Zur Ram-Air-Ausstattung gehörten außerdem zwei verchromte Drehverschlüsse im Stil des Mach 1 von 1970 und eine zweifarbige Lackierung der Motorhaube in Mattschwarz oder Silber, abgestimmt auf die Aufkleber und Zierstreifen. Zusätzlich prangte auf jeder Seite der Motorhaube ein Aufkleber mit der Aufschrift „351 RAM AIR“ oder „429 RAM AIR“. LG Tom
