In the early 1980s, Peugeot urgently needed to pull itself together. Initially equipped with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder and 105 hp, the French followed suit in 1986 and presented the GTI with a 1.9-liter four-cylinder that sent 128 hp to the front axle.
