In 1959, the W 111 replaced the large pontoon models of the W 180 series. The Mercedes-Benz W 111 model series, which enthusiasts also like to call the "large (rear) fin", offered passive safety that had never been seen before: the safety body developed by Daimler-Benz was used here for the first time in the world. In 1961, Mercedes-Benz expanded the model series to include a coupé. These so-called SE Coupés were the last Largely handmade Mercedes, so the price was almost twice as high as that of the sedans. Although the coupé is based on the unabridged sedan chassis, no sheet metal part is identical.

The vehicle to be auctioned in this auction is a Mercedes-Benz W111 280 SE 3.5 Coupé from 1970. The elegant coupé with the chassis number 11102610002640, which was first delivered in Germany, has 4 owners – the first owner was the Daimler-Benz branch in Dortmund. From 2012, this W111 was sold according to the seller's information to a private lover, who had a collection. Before the handover to the new owner, according to the seller, a fresh TÜV approval until 2024 and an H approval will still be completed. An expert opinion from November 2020 is available, in which the car received the condition grade 2 and a replacement value of 106,800 € was certified. Worth mentioning are the given matching numbers.

This coupé has already undergone a restoration. The light blue 280 3.5 SE shows no visible paint blemishes or colour differences. There are no serious dents, scratches or missing parts on the body, the condition of the chrome parts is also very good, even the windscreen, the side windows or the huge panoramic rear window have no defects. At the neuralgic zones of a W111, in which the rust can form, this 250 SEb coupé is apparently rust-free, according to the owner there are no external modifications. The gap dimensions make a decent impression.

Semperit tyres from the production year 2014 are mounted in the dimension of 205/70 on 14-inch, so-called Mercedes-Baroque alloy wheels. Negative abnormalities on the brakes or in the area of the chassis are not to be mentioned.

Filigree decorative elements and sumptuous wood and leather inserts fill the interior. Matching the blue exterior color, the interior is mostly kept in brown. Although the leather seats have some patina, they are not damaged. The rear bench seat impresses with its also good state of preservation. In terms of colour, the black 2-spoke steering wheel with chrome ring stands out. In terms of equipment on board this coupé, a sunroof and the Becker Mexico cassette radio are to be listed. All displays, controls and instruments in the interior have a flawless function.

The round instruments in the interior show a read mileage of 31,330. The documents of this vehicle include the first (not validated) vehicle letter from 1970 as well as the original operating instructions, the circuit diagram and the data card from 1970.

Powered by a 200 hp eight-cylinder engine with a displacement of 3.5 litres, engine type M 116 E 35, the W111 Coupé ensures sufficient driving performance and is shifted via a 4-speed manual transmission. The drive unit performs its service without background noise and has no defects. According to the seller, the engine underwent a complete overhaul in all components. Before the handover, the current holder has a fresh inspection done.
