After the Mercedes.Benz 190 (W201) had opened up a new market segment for the Stuttgart-based luxury manufacturer with great success in 1982, the new small Mercedes-Class followed in 1993, now called the C-Class after changing nomenclature. A neat, well-behaved car, which was available with a wide selection of petrol and diesel engines and which held its own very well in its competitive environment of the middle class. Although emphatically sporty and motorised versions à la 190 E 2.3 16/ 190 E 2.5 16 were no longer in the range, the first C-Class impressively demonstrated its motorsport suitability in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM).
