Development of the W126 began in 1979 and the W126 series aimed to achieve improved ride, handling and fuel efficiency. The 1973 oil crisis and stricter emissions and safety regulations in the United States significantly influenced the development of the W126 to ensure lower emissions and higher fuel efficiency. During the 12-year production period (until 1991), a total of 892,123 units were manufactured.

Technik: Also ich habe schon viele Fahrzeuge gesehen die 1988 eine 1- attestiert bekommen haben, aber hier handelt es sich um ein ganzheitliches Sahnestück!! Infolge der Ölkrise bei der Entwicklung konzentrierte man sich bei der Entwicklung der neuen S-Klasse parallel zum sicherheitstechnisch Bestmöglichen auch auf ökonomische Kriterien wie etwa die Senkung des Fahrzeuggewichts, und dadurch auf die Verbesserung des Fahrzeug spezifischen Verbrauchs im Vergleich zur Vorgängerbaureihe. Durch eine strömungsgünstige Form mit einem CW-Wert von 0,36 statt 0,41 sowie leichtere Bauweise konnte der Verbrauch der Baureihe 126 gegenüber ihrem Vorgängermodell W 116 um über 10 % gesenkt werden. Durch weitere Maßnahmen im Rahmen des „Mercedes-Benz Energiekonzepts“ im Jahre 1981 sank der Verbrauch weiter; der 500 SE verbrauchte bis zu 30 % weniger als der Vorgänger 450 SE der Baureihe 116. Mit umfangreicher Ausstattung ist wohl das Schiebedach gemeint, denn sonst kann ich hier kein weiteres werkseitiges Extra erkennen. Oder irre ich mich?
