The Mercedes-Benz 170 S-D was produced from 1953 to 1955 as a diesel version of the upper mid-range 170 S saloon. As the Mercedes 180 was already available at the time, the S models, which now appeared outdated, were offered for sale at a lower price. The body of the S model was placed on the chassis of the 170 D and was one of the first Mercedes models to be equipped with a diesel engine - a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 40 hp.
