Technik: Angesichts eines begrenzten Budgets, aber des dringenden Bedarfs an einem Modell zwischen dem in die Jahre gekommenen Defender 90 und Defender 110 und dem immer erfolgreicheren Range Rover im Premiumsegment, entstand die erste Generation eines neuen, günstigeren und familienfreundlicheren Modells: der Discovery. Im Grunde ein umgestalteter Range Rover, basierend auf demselben Chassis und Radstand, mit derselben Windschutzscheibe, A-Säule und denselben vorderen Türscheiben, übernahm er große Teile der inneren Struktur des Range Rover. Durch diverse Kosteneinsparungen – insbesondere eine günstigere Innenausstattung, einen kleineren und leistungsschwächeren Basis-Dieselmotor und nur zwei Seitentüren im ersten Jahr – wurde das weitgehend identische Fahrzeug jedoch zu einem deutlich niedrigeren Preis angeboten und schloss ab 1989 die Lücke im Modellprogramm von Land Rover.
