Model history

The Mercedes-Benz W116, produced from 1972 to 1980, marked the birth of the legendary S-Class. The model series set standards in terms of comfort and passive safety. With various engine options, including the powerful 450 SEL 6.9 with a 6.9-liter V8 petrol engine, the W116 impressed both technically and stylistically. The saloon was appreciated worldwide and received numerous awards, including Car of the Year in 1974. Its successor, the 126 series, appeared on the scene in 1979, while some models of the W116 continued to be built until 1980. In addition to the standard versions of the W116, some customer requests led to very special variants, which were elaborately rebuilt by hand in the factory's own special construction department. Complete conversions of the interior and exterior were carried out here, which cannot be found in any brochure or price list. In the hot phase of terrorism in the 1970s, armored versions of the S-Class W116 series were also produced. The limited customer base was restricted to particularly vulnerable individuals such as politicians, royalty and people with a high profile. As a rule, the factory tanks had to be contractually returned to Daimler Benz by the customer after their intended use and were then made available to the Federal Criminal Police Office for training purposes. The vehicles, some of which were severely damaged, were then scrapped immediately. The aim was to prevent criminals on the used car market from spying on the protective structure and exploiting possible weak points for attacks. Due to this situation, the majority of the specially protected vehicles did not survive very long.
