Model history:

Porsche presented the 944 at the IAA in 1981: It was not a successor to the 924, but an expansion of the model range. Thus, the new model closed the gap that existed between the 924 and the 911 in terms of price and performance. At the same time, it was also the first time in Porsche's history that 4 different regular model series were offered (924, 911, 911 and 928). A key technical feature of the 944 was its four-cylinder engine, which was developed entirely in-house - this was effectively half of a 928 powerplant. Finally, the 944 was built until 1989, before it was replaced by the 944 S2.
