Volkswagen Golf 1 Cabrio US (1988)

Moritz Helbich

Kickdown's Take

by Moritz Helbich

This 1988 VW Golf 1 Cabrio US is a genuine pre-production model from the 1989 model year, manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück for brochure photography and U.S. homologation, and featured in the official Cabriolet brochure. Finished in Flash Silver Metallic with a light gray cloth interior, it has 247,964 kilometers on the odometer and a low production number, indicating that it was produced particularly early as a marketing and test vehicle. The 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with 95 PS runs smoothly; extensive work has been performed in recent years on the brake system, steering, cooling system, and transmission. With an “H” license plate, this is a documented pre-production vehicle with an extraordinary history, ideal for collectors of rare Golf models.

Summary

For sale is a 1988 VW Golf 1 Cabriolet in Flash Silver Metallic (LP7Y) with an automatic transmission. This vehicle is an exceptional pre-production model from the 1989 model year, which was manufactured directly at Karmann in Osnabrück for brochure photography and U.S. homologation. The very low production number, 003278, indicates that it was produced particularly early as a marketing and test vehicle, giving this Golf Cabriolet significant historical value. The body is in good overall condition and has been partially repainted. There is one known instance of repaired accident damage. Some work, including steering bearings, the air conditioning system, the interior carpet, and the activated carbon filter, still needs to be done. LG Tom
