As early as 1980, Jaguar was considering how and when the current XJ6 could be replaced. The engineers continued to develop the sleek and beautiful sedan under the internal code XJ40 (because it was planned with a four-liter engine, which only came later) with the aim of changing as little as possible in terms of shape and style in terms of wood and leather. The wheelbase also remained unchanged compared to its predecessor, but the car grew by just under three centimeters in length and width. The shape was slightly streamlined, the hood no longer had bumps above the headlights, and instead of two fuel caps, only one hole was needed for the fuel nozzle. In addition to the six-cylinder variants, the new Jaguar XJ40 was also sold with a V12 engine. Compared to its predecessors, the XJ40 was much stiffer and boasted better wiring, and the sheet metal was now zinc-coated.
