Model history

After the long-running SL R107, which dominated the Mercedes roadster scene for almost 20 years, the R129 successor model presented in 1989 once again became the undisputed standard-bearer of all open-top sports cars. Visually and technically, it marked a quantum leap from its predecessor and was so sought-after at the start of production that there was even open speculation about sales contracts. With its wide range of engines, from six to eight to twelve-cylinder, the SL remained the benchmark vehicle in this small but steadily growing market segment at the beginning of the 1990s. In the end, over 200,000 units were sold by the end of production in 2001.
