Model history

The Thunderbird appeared one year after the Corvette and was a direct competitor to it. The new two-seater from Ford had the same construction: its own chassis and rigid rear-wheel drive axle with leaf springs. However, there was one significant difference - the engine was a V8 right from the start, whereas the Corvette still had a six-cylinder at the beginning. The "Classic Birds" (1955-1957) were followed by the "Square Birds" (1958-1960) and the "Bullet Birds" (1961-1963) and then the so-called "Flair Birds" (1964-1966): This 4th Thunderbird generation differed from its predecessor primarily in terms of appearance with a longer hood and a shorter roofline and was available as a Coupé, Landau Coupé and Convertible.
